Rich did a fantastic job at the WCPS today. The program had a judging
form for all us wanna-be judges, and I saw many people mark him as
their 1st or 2nd choice. He placed 3rd. Ed Hearn was the champion (and
was excellent). Second place went to Doug Wilson. The top three
speeches were equally good, but I think body movement was what decided
it in the end. IMO, Rich was the best at audience interaction.

All in all, it was a very fun, but exhausting day. Betsy

I suspect Rich may have a busy year with people wanting to be coached.
He was surrounded by fans after the contest.

I agree that his speech was awesome, and I'm really pleased that someone
I "know" was in the top three. (The Region VII participant was not from
my District.)

Betsy, we should have had some way for the participants from this
newsgroup to meet up. I actually expected a very low attendance, based
on what some people in my District have said about attendance at past
conferences, say around 300-500 people, and as a result, I figured I
could look at everyone's name tags and find you.

I did meet up with Rich after the contest and congratulated him. As for
other participants in this newsgroup, I saw Annette Caron, also a DC
area resident, who used to post here around 1999. I met her that year at
the Region VII conference in Philadelphia. I had hoped to meet Jim Key
so that I could apologize to him for some rude moments brought on by
being so close to a World Champion of Public Speaking both at the
District 38 Spring Conference this year and in this newsgroup, but I
didn't catch up with him. I hope I will have the opportunity to do so in
the future.

If Samuel Conner, another DC area resident who posts here, was present,
I missed out on meeting up with him, too.

I'll post some other thoughts regarding the conference later this week.
I'm glad I went, but it's not going to be an every year thing for me. I
will not be in Phoenix or Calgary (unless I am the Region VII
International Speech contestant, which is not going to happen, or
possibly if I am the District 38 Toastmaster of the year, which is
probably not going to happen due to the number of outstanding
Toastmasters we have in our District), but I am looking forward to
attending in twenty-oh-nine if it is indeed in Connecticut.

Thank you everyone! The week was incredible, and my 7 minutes and 10
seconds or so in the spotlight was tremendous!

I have no regrets about my speech or my placing by the judges. The
crowd made me feel as if I were the World Champion at every laugh, and
even the spontaneous applause 2/3 through.

Thank you all for your support!

Regina-

I was unable to attend...my wife had surgery on the monday preceding
the conference, so I was on Florence Nightengale duty last week.

I count it as my loss that I missed the chance to meet you!
