I am thinking on conducting a survey for the fact finding report
(project #4) of the Speaking to Inform manual. Using the survey I would
like to get the answers to the major questions: Why did you join? Why do
you stay? Why did you leave?
I will conduct the survey, then summarize the results, then present the
report at the club.
Now, I don't want to re-invent the wheel. If you have a survey on the
subject and you want to share it, email it to me at pcjr101 at hotmail
dot com. If you know where there is one on the web, post the URL here.
Suggestions are welcome.
Also, what type of related information would be useful to know? E.g.,
how long as member, highest Communication award, highest leadership
award, meetings attended per year.
Thanks in advance for your help.

1. I joined to give moral support to my husband, who is extremely shy
but has to give presentations at major symposia. Initially I thought I
would drop out after he got past his first 2-3 speeches.
2. I stayed because I discovered giving speeches is FUN.
3. I haven't left Toastmasters, but I have left several clubs.
Initially I joined a bunch of them because they all had different
personalities. When dues were increased, it became too expensive so I
chose the club I liked the best and left the others. I will be leaving
my club in a few more years when we move, but I will try to find a new
club to join in my new town.
4. Stats: Member since 2003. Highest award to date: ACG (and just
completed HPL, but haven't filed it yet). DTM is scheduled for July.
Meetings attended: 24 for Home Club (I try not to miss, because
everyone's needed for the roles). At least another 20 because I'm Area
Governor, and an additional 50 because I am mentoring a weekly club. If
you count the contests (I'm a judge at 10 for Humorous this month)
that's roughly 120 club meetings per year.

Why did I join? Because of my split personality - half shy, half ham.
Toastmasters has helped me overcome my shyness and gives the ham plenty of
chances to perform.
Why do I stay? Because it's fun, and because I enjoy seeing, and helping,
other people grow. I have never left a club, although one of my clubs left
me (Nova Toastmasters folded last year). For many years, I belonged to
three clubs; now it's just two.
I've been a member since December of 1990, so it's almost 16 years now.
Highest Communication award? That is debatable. I am currently an
ATM-silver, although in some ways I think my old ATM (Able Toastmaster)
counted more. Why? In order to earn it, I had to complete three advanced
manuals and give two speeches outside of Toastmasters. I also have a CL,
and am almost finished with my 16th CTM.
Meetings per year? That's a bit hard to calculate. Currently I probably
attend a little over 60 meetings of my clubs in a year. However, during
contest season, I usually help out by judging, counting ballots, etc. at
other clubs. In the past few weeks, I have attended three extra meetings,
and will be attending another one tomorrow. On my trips to Australia, I
have missed my own club meetings, but have attended several meetings down
under (six on my last three-week trip).

betsy, Joy and everyone.
It's OK to answer those questions here in the NG. I am interested in
your answers, too.
But what I need is examples of surveys that seek that kind of
information (i.e., ask those questions etc.) Sorry if I mis-communicated
in the original post.

Well, that certainly makes more sense when you consider the question
about leaving TM...

Hi PC -
I do not have a survey per se on this topic, but during my tenure as an ID
candidate, and as an ID, I conducted a general session at 6 or 7 different
District Conferences where I asked your first two questions. (Obviously
everyone at the conferences was still a member, so question #3 didn't come
up!)
The reasons for joining and the reasons for staying were all remarkably
similar from place to place ... but what was - for most attendees -
surprisingly consistent was that the reason each person had for staying had
absolutely nothing to do with the reason that he or she had joined in the
first place.
I spent 5 or 10 minutes discussing this with each group before moving on to
the balance of the workshop, which was about one-to-one recruiting -
inviting others to join Toastmasters. The point being that the recruiting
needs to be done based on JOINING reasons and leave it at that. Let those
new Members figure out their own reasons for staying.
I will be very interested to learn the results of your survey if you decide
to share them with all of us here :)
Warm regards,
Susan.

Hello Susan:
As a Past International Director and an active member of this newsgroup
I'm surprised to read that you are former Toastmaster. I hope you will
share with us why you left TM and more importantly what can we do to
bring you back to us?

Why did I leave? Just ran out of things to do and learn, and had lots of
other things on my plate demanding time. I don't in any way mean to say that
I am the world's best communicator or leader and don't need any more
learning in either area! Simply that I had progressed in both areas to the
best level that I could within the TM program, and that continuing on wasn't
going to move me along any more :)
And over the years as a member, I gave loads of hours, weeks, months of my
time to the organization, so there were no feelings of debt on my part. It
was paid :)
As I always say in my signature file, I am a lifelong advocate of the
program at Club level, and am always encouraging people to join local Clubs.
However, I will not be a member again.
Thanks, though, Iona!
Warm regards,
Susan.

I'm glad this came up, it gives me a chance to tell you I'm glad you
still find time to participate in this forum. I really value what you
have to say.
It makes sense that your life got too busy to stay active as a
member... after all one purpose of TM is to train us to have skills for
other opportunities. Even if you aren't a member, you'll always be a
member of the family.
