Dear Friends,
Could you tell differences between:
a) Humorous speech
b) Joke
c) Satire
d) Funny story
e) Comedy
f) Mockery
Can some one elaborate with example?
Best regards

A speech may contain several funny stories.
4. Comedy is a category that includes anything that makes you laugh.
5. Satire and mockery both focus on illogic, weakness, and foolishness.
Satire seeks to illuminate; mockery seeks to humiliate.
Satire is clever, mockery is a cleaver.

There is also the "Tall Tale". A tall tale is a story with some elements
which at least stretch, if not break, the limits of believability (e.g Baron
Munchausen riding a cannon ball, Cyrano de Bergerac's character being pulled
to the moon by his wet hair, etc.) A tall tale may or may not have a point.
The distinction between a "humorous speech" and other forms has led to some
disagreement in Toastmasters circles around these parts. I tend to be a
stick-in-the-mud and believe that in the Humorous Speech Contest, the
winning entry must have a beginning, a middle, an end, and a point, all
given with jest, humor, exageration, and levity. Others do not agree and
will gladly score highly a fanciful story that makes them laugh. The rules
from TI offer no guidance on this matter.

The others have pretty much reflected my own thoughts. Last week I
performed standup comedy at a local club. Because of its structure
(not content), I wouldn't consider it for the Humorous Speech contest.

Right. The rules specifically state that a string of one-liners does not
constitute a humorous speech.

Another point: In a speech, quotes and lines from other people are
expected, as long as they are appropriately credited. In a standup
routine, using someone else's lines is a mortal sin.
