I'm giving a presentation this weekend to students about public speaking.
Can any of you give me examples of bad public speaking in popular movies?
I'd like to include a video clip if I can

Thanks,
Colin

I can't readily think of an example from the movies, but our local
sports
scene has one of the worst ah-utterer you can imagine: Jerry Jones
(I live in greater Dallas, and he owns the Dallas Cowboys).

It is PAINFUL, if you care at all about good public speaking, to hear
him being interviewed...

Oooh, I could just capture some audio from the baseball playoffs. One of the
announcing teams is just brutally bad.

I think I'm going to go with ben Stein as the teacher in Ferris Bueller's
Day Off as my bad example. And if I decide to use a good example then I may
go with Robin Williams in Dead Poet's Society.

You think he is bad? Basketball season is about to start. That bunch is
ripe for ummmms and ahhhhs. At least it is refreshing to hear it in a
German accent once in a while (Go Mavs!)

There is always the painful act of Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon.

Monty Python's Spanish Inquistion skit. Obviously, if the
cardinal speaking had prepared, he would not have lost his audience.

Several good examples are found in Dead Poet's Society. Likewise, Anthony
Hopkins in Instinct provides some good scenes - like when he tapes Goodin's
mouth shut. Silence of the Lambs and A Few Good Men also have some good
examples. I like "You can't handle the truth!" followed by a powerful
thought-provoking monologue.

in my opinion,
Keith

How a little bit of the good and bad from the movies...

Classic Good Speakers:

Hugh Grant delivering a toast in "My Best Friends Wedding"
Eulogy by friend in same
William Holden in board room speech in "Executive Suite"
Robert Redford in pre-election rally at the end of "The Candidate"
Jimmy Stewart stopping the bank run in "Wonderful Life"

Classic Bad Speakers:
Hugh Grant's friend delivering a toast in "My Best Friends Wedding"
Frederic Martch as Matt Brady at end of "Inherit the Wind"
Lee J. Cobb exhorting the jury to vote guilty at the end of "Twelve
Angry Men"
Stallone's speech from the ring at the end of Rocky 4
Jeff Bridges address to Congress in "The Candidate"

Some like it hot, some don't:

Go to AmericanRhetoric.com for good examples -

Bad examples, which I think was your initial focus, are obviously
tougher to find. Adam Sandler's answer to a quiz question in Billy
Madison is classic, and Samuel L. Jackson's inspiring speech to the
remaining scientists in Deep Blue Sea is great too, since it is quickly
interrupted by his being unceremoniously eaten by a giant shark.

Rich.

Amazing what Google can do, as I was also going to suggest

http://www.americanrhetoric.com/moviespeeches.htm

Some of my favourites are on this list, including the king's pre-battle
speech to the troops in "Henry V" (not sure if they have the Branagh or
Olivier versions, but both are great) and the Howard Beale rants in
"Network".

As for bad examples, there are none that I can think of offhand.

While on the subject of great speeches and sports reports, here is a link
that could inspire a persuade with power or presenting an award assignment.

It takes about three minutes to warm up, then you had better believe it.

I've racked my brain trying to come up with examples, and this response
is probably too late for you. The movie "My Cousin Vinny" has two
examples: District Attorney Jim Trotter's presentations to the jury,
complete with calculated gestures and word emphasis; and the poor
stuttering defense attorney John Gibbons (played by Austin Pendleton,
who stuttered in real life.)

One example of good speaker:

Al Pacino(As Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade ) in "Scent of a Woman",
when he was defending for Chris O'Donnell (As Charlie Simms)
