This past Wednesday evening I had yet another positive Toastmasters
experience, to add to the long list of those I've had in the past.
Division B in District 33 decided to hold a Judges Training session. I have
attended such sessions several times in the past, but I have never seen it
done the way this was.
The secondary contest in District 33 this fall is Evaluation. The session
began with the leader going over the ballots for the Humorous and Evaluation
contests, giving some explanation of what each category means, and
discussing the need for impartiality. Each attendee had a copy of each
ballot.
After this, the group heard a Humorous contest speech, and marked their
ballots. Following this speech, one person (who had been selected in
advance) was taken out of the room, given five minutes to work on her notes,
and then was brought back in to do an evaluation of the speech that had just
been given. Again, attendees filled out a ballot.
The group had previously been numbered off, and each person or group of
people, with a specific number, discussed one portion of the ballot, telling
what score they had given and why.
I think this was the best, most comprehensive judges training I have ever
attended. I believe I would feel that way even if I weren't the person who
gave the Humorous speech. I will be competing in another District, using
this speech. The evaluation and the comments of the "judges" gave me some
extremely helpful ideas on how to improve the speech.
I would recommend this method of judges training, and would urge anyone who
is invited to participate as a speaker to leap at the chance. It was a
valuable and positive part of my Toastmasters life.

Sounds great--and it's nice to hear about positive experiences like
this. Toastmasters has many of them. |

What a great way to do Judge training ... no doubt it was extremely valuable
for everyone!
And good luck to you, Joy, in using the refined version of that speech in
the next Humorour Speech Contest!

Thank you, Susan. Yes, I think it was the most effective way of training
judges. It is one thing to do the judging, and maybe even have the ballots
counted. I've seen that done with videos from WCPS finals. However, the
fact that it was a live speech, and the opportunity to make comments
directly to the speaker, and to hear the reasoning others used, makes it
immensely valuable, IMNSHO.
