Gagged by BBC Ariel's editor
On 25 June 1997 I wrote to Landmark Publishing Services, who deal with
advertising for the BBC's in-house magazine Ariel.
I requested they run an advert "BBC Newsreaders Spying on my Home" in the
Personal column. They accepted my instructions
and payment, and the following advert did indeed run in Ariel's issue of 8
July 1997.
Following the successful placement of this small ad, I wrote again to
Landmark on 17 July 1997, requesting they run exactly
the same advert for 10 issues, enclosing payment. Unfortunately, the
advert did not appear in any further issues of Ariel,
because Ariel's editor Robin Reynolds nixed it. Here is an email from
Elaine Smith of Landmark dated 26 August 1997.
Date: Tue, 26 Aug 1997 09:34:25 +0100 (BST)
X-Sender: landmark@194.112.32.30
From: elaine@lps.co.uk (Elaine Smith)
Subject: Re: advert - ariel
With regard to your E-mail of 22 August 1997 concerning your advertisement
in the Ariel magazine.
I was instructed by Ariel to remove your advertisement from the classified
pages as they were not comfortable with the contents of the Internet
address you supplied. I realise we have placed the advertisement
successfully for you in the past. Unfortunately this time they decided
they
did not want it printed.
[snip]
I'm really sorry for the inconvenience I know this will have caused you,
but as you will understand Ariel have the last say in what is printed and
what is not.
Kind Regards
Elaine Smith
Classified Advertising Manager.
In my reply to Elaine Smith, I said;
I will speak to them directly, I believe their email address is
Ariel@bbc.co.uk. As you say, if the advert went through the first time,
then it should have gone through this time without problems. As I see it,
either what is on the website is true (which is my belief) in which case
they should allow it to be published, or else it is symptomatic of
delusions in which case again any reasonable person would recognise it
as such and its publication would not be suppressed. After all Britain
is not supposed to have censorship - it isn't a Communist country.
I also wrote to Mr Reynolds, Ariel's editor, asking him to reconsider his
decision to censor my advert. He replied
with the following letter;
Since a magazine's editor has final say over what appears in the
publication, there is nothing further that I can do
to encourage Ariel to accept my advert. Mr Reynold's censorship of my
legitimate complaint gives the game away a bit, though.
The BBC wish people to think of them as truthful and impartial - yet when
they are caught harassing one of their audience, they
resort to the same censoring tactics characteristic of the regimes they
hypocritically condemn.

At the exact same time you posted this, I posted an opinion about self-

disappeared. And a "doesn;t" turned into a "does". Now I know why....

200 people - wow. Wow!
I'd be shocked if we hit 100 this year. And ours was 1/2 the price.
Congratulations on a great job.

The Vernon & Area Toastmasters Conference Committee is pleased to announce that with the excellent sponsorship from local businesses and the fact that we have reached our budgeted minimum of 200 registrants, we are able to dramatically reduce our full-conference registration package from the current $195 to $175.00, effective immediately.
Firstly, this means that those who have registered in the last 22 days and paid the $195 rate will receive a refund - after the conference.
Secondly, it means that more and more of our Toastmaster friends from all over British Columbia's District 21 will be able to benefit from a benchmark Spring Conference held in the beautiful North Okanagan.
If you missed the gondola before, here's your last chance to:
Come Away with us....at Vineyards & Vistas: Cultivating Success
Please visit www.toastmasters.bc.ca to register online.
NOTE: Meal service cannot be guaranteed for those registering after May 1st.

Yes, a district colour, along with the district motto for the year.
"Let's Be Somebody Together" was this years motto.

A district color. Hey, whatever works. Still, that motto coupled with
that color just sounds like an episode of the Barney the dinosaur show.

Both female contestants that evening wore well-tailored business-
appropriate suits in powerful colors. I don't recall if they were
longer skirts or if they wore pants, but they were sharp, tailored,
and business-appropriate.

....and then begin looking for a new job.
It's rather common for different facilities to have different dress
codes, depending on the type of work that goes on and the type of
clients that may walk through the door.
So, if the management at the Eastern location doesn't want their
employees to know that the Northwest location gets to wear casual
dress to work, it's probably because they've made a decision on their
dress code, have no plans to change it, and don't want to deal with
the dissent and dissatisfaction that might ensue if their employees
find out about the more casual dress elsewhere.
Entirely reasonable for a situation involving paid employment,
wouldn't you say? |

Let's just say our District Governor this year is a very visual man.
In the past, he's been very active in Conference planning ... and he's
been known to decide that everyone needs to wear formal dress for
Saturday night in <insert color scheme here>. Not something I've seen
in the other districts I've visited but... anyway, that explains why
you saw what you saw in those photos. He chose purple & gold for his
logo's colors this year, and there was a lot of purple worn at
District events throughout the term as a show of support for him.
BTW, Colin - you made me snarf my drink. Barney the dinosaur ....
<chuckle>
Next year's DG announced her theme and showed us her logo Saturday
night when she gave her Incoming address. She's going with "All For
One, and One For All" (a good unifying theme) and the logo is
primarily royal blue (a good TM color!) with accents in pink. She's a
breast cancer survivor ... as are three other visible women leaders in
our district. It's a pretty classy tie-in of something that's
important to her.
